This photographic series of Tkachenko is less provocative than Motherland. He also works with demolished architecture - churches in this case, but not destroys them this time, only alters by adding paint/wooden constructions/textile.
This series raises questions in terms of the concept: is there something behind black abstract forms painted on the walls of churches? In this series there's also a work with the black metal cross, waved into the building (which can relate to religion); the one with the small building fully covered in black textile (which can relate to the hidden parts of the religion), but this particular image seems to be just a visual exercise. The other question is about the choice of black colour or a lack of colour in some sense. Why such wide range of materials (plastic, paint, wood/ metal/ textile)?
This projects relates to the broader questions of history; parallel past, as Tkachenko describes this project as a combination of modernist and pre-modernist forms, "manipulating the history" (2017); religion, cultural heritage.
