This photograph is from a self-published book by Mayumi Suzuki about her parents, who used to own a photo studio and were gone after the tsunami in 2011. She composed old family photographs with her own photographs taken with her father's damaged camera, maps, photographs of ruins, etc.

In preface to the book, Suzuki (2017) makes the connection between shooting with the broken lens and "touching" the world of dead, comparing disappearing images with the scars, and the attempt to reconstruct family memory with this book somehow. How does her work relates to Barthes' ideas about connection between Death and photography?

This project tells about coping with the loss, representation of tragedies and how behind the statistics (of tragedies/wars), the real lives and stories are hidden.
